Acupuncture For Cynics

Acupuncture For Cynics

Have You Always Been Curious About Acupuncture, But Were Never Quite Sure Where To Stick The Needles? If you associate acupuncture with needles, pain and weird alternative medicine then you are horribly misinformed about the benefits of the world's oldest form of medicinal treatment.

Hypotheses and Prediction

What is trivial to one ecologist is the major problem of ecology to another. What can we do about this unsatisfactory state of affairs In the long run, history sorts out these issues, but for ecologists facing biodiversity issues now, history will take too long. We cannot escape these judgments and more discussion ought to be devoted to them in ecological journals. If medical research councils devoted equal amounts of money to acupuncture and schizophrenia research, we would be alarmed at the poor judgment. We should not hesitate to make similar value judgments for ecological research. No person or group is infallible in their judgments, and this call for discussion of the relative importance of ecological questions must not be misinterpreted as a call for the regimentation of research ideas.

Models of Disease and Therapy

The limits of scientific medicine leave room for alternative interpretations, explanations, and therapies, for example, alternative medicine like chiropractic, homeopathy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and a multitude of herbs and natural folk remedies. Some people are reluctant to use governmen-tally approved and regulated remedies, regardless of testing, and prefer to use relatively untested and loosely regulated nutraceuticals (drugs marketed as foods). (See Chapter 5.) Some forms of alternative medicine have no theoretical foundation and no empirical support, and seem to be fraudulent attempts to exploit human suffering. However, the history of medicine includes a number of folk remedies that were discovered and subsequently absorbed by mainstream medicine, with or without scientific proof. Examples include digitalis, rau-wolfia, and smallpox vaccinations. Acupuncture may be moving from illegitimacy to legitimacy.

Background and Epidemiology of Hepatitis Viruses in Correctional Settings

Incidence of new HCV infections has been declining since the late 1980s, largely the result of a decrease in infections among injection-drug users. The majority of new HCV infections continue to occur in adult age groups (persons 25 years of age) with the greatest decline in incidence among 25- to 39-year-olds, historically the age group with the highest rates of infection. In this age group, incidence has declined by 92 from 1992 to 0.4 100,000 in 2004 (CDC, 2006b). Blacks and whites have the same incidence of new infection (0.2 100,000) rates among males (0.3 100,000) and females (0.2 100,000) are also similar. No association has been found between newly acquired HCV infection and military service, medical, surgical, or dental procedures, tattooing, acupuncture, ear piercing, or foreign travel (Alter et al., 1982, 1989). If transmission from such exposures does occur, the frequency has been too low to detect. However, results from seroprevalence studies of noninstitutionalized...

Nutritional Vitamin and Alternative Complementary Treatment Strategies

Vitamin and mineral supplementation may also be beneficial. Dietary supplements with increased tryptophan have been utilized in an effort to reduce premenstrual symptoms, particularly carbohydrate craving. A variety of herbal medications have also been used for treating PMS. This has been particularly welcomed by many patients who prefer so-called natural remedies. Other alternative strategies that have been investigated include acupuncture, massage therapy, and homeopathic remedies.

Epidemiology and Geographical Distribution

It should be noted that transmission of the infection may result from accidental inoculation of minute amounts of blood or fluid contaminated with blood during medical, surgical and dental procedures immunisation with inadequately sterilised syringes and needles intravenous and percutaneous drug abuse tattooing ear, nose and body piercing acupuncture laboratory accidents and accidental inoculation with razors and similar objects that have been contaminated with blood. Additional factors may be important for the transmission of hepatitis B infection in the tropics these include traditional tattooing and scarification, blood letting, ritual circumcision and repeated biting by blood-sucking arthropod vectors. Investigation of the role that biting insects may play in the spread of hepatitis B has yielded conflicting results. HBsAg has been detected in several species of mosquitoes and in bed bugs that were either trapped in the wild or fed experimentally on infected blood, but no...

Alternative Medicine and Female Infertility

Hey-Joo Kang, Pak Chung and Raymond Chang Acupuncture Acupuncture is a vital therapeutic modality in traditional Chinese Medicine and its use can be traced back for centuries. The theory behind acupuncture is based upon the premise that there are patterns of energy flow, or Qi, through the body, which are essential for health. When a disease state exists, the flow of Qi is interrupted and its correction will assist in the healing process. Acupuncture can correct imbalances of flow at identifiable points close to the skin. The flow of Qi is based upon a meridian system of vital channels. The meridians consist of 20 channels interconnected by about 400 acupoints. These acupoints correspond to specific areas on the surface of the body, which demonstrate higher electrical conductance, thought to be due to the increased density of gap junctions along cell borders. These gap junctions serve as sinks, or converging points for electromagnetic fields. In addition, a higher metabolic rate,...

Study Design

23 The double-blind design is not possible for a same treatments where the practitioner plays an essential part in the treatment. This is particularly relevant in 'alternative' therapies (e.g. acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy, psychotherapy and reiki). Although a placebo cannot be given, different treatments can be compared. More research on methodology may be needed to find suitable study designs for such treatments.

Hepatitis B

Common vaccine-preventable disease in travellers. The risk factors which may lead to subsequent infection with hepatitis B include sexual behaviour, medical or dental intervention, which may follow an accident or an adventure sports activity, acupuncture, tattooing, body piercing, haircuts, sharing razors and toothbrushes all of these may result in transmission of bloodborne viruses. Travel health care professionals should consider vaccination against hepatitis B for those travelling outside northwestern Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, including long- and short-term travellers, those at occupational risk, e.g. aid health care workers including expatriates, missionaries and the military, those with preexisting medical conditions who may require medical attention while abroad, and young children who may be in contact with other young children in an endemic area.

Treatment Of Obesity

In the food industry, it is cheaper to use low-cost fillers such as fats and oils in food processing, than reducing fat content, which could affect profits. Furthermore, fat is palatable, which is exploited by restaurants, cafeterias and fast-food establishments. The image of 'healthy' food being unpleasant, bad tasting or no fun to eat is deeply rooted in the American psyche.89'90 It is of interest that snack foods with reduced calories and or saturated fat are usually eaten in greater quantities, to compensate for the reduction, in part because the consumer believes the food is healthy. This behavior thus cancels out any benefit of using these low-fat products. There are many reasons why weight gain is easy, and also why weight loss is difficult. Thus, people are forever looking for the 'easy way out'. Hypnotherapy, acupuncture, vibrators, creams, massage and even liposuction have not been demonstrated to achieve lasting weight loss in clinical trials.87,88
