Early signs of commitment of haemopoietic cells towards the B lineage

The events that occur as cells differentiate towards B cells are summarized in Figure 20.7. The associated phenotypic changes are set out in Table 20.2. The earliest signs associated with differentiation of haemopoietic cells towards the B lineage are the expression of CD19, CD24 and MHC class II molecules on the cell surface and CD22 inside the cell. These changes are followed by the expression of molecules such as recombinase-activating genes (RAG) 1 and 2, which are involved in immunoglobulin gene rearrangement. These genes act in both immunoglobulin and TCR gene rearrangement, and their absence totally blocks further differentiation towards B or T cells.
