Folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) is a yellow, crystalline, water-soluble substance (mol. wt 441). It is the parent compound of a large family of folate compounds. Pteroylglutamic acid consists of three parts: pteridine, para-aminobenzoate and L-glutamic acid (Figure 5.8).
