Victims of casual reasons (seven highlanders and nine lowlanders) were used as sample group for research puposes (the general artery, an internal artery, basilar arteries, and interbrain arteries). The sites of the brain from the zone of an ischemic insult, and uninjured zones of nine patients who died from an ischemic insult were also investigated. The tissues of the brain and the main vessels were fixed in a buffering solution of 10 formalin. They were then dehydrated in spirit at a rising concentration with enlightenment in xylene and filled-in paraffin. For light optical and mor-phometrical study, slices of 5-7 m were painted with hematoxylin - eosine, picrophycsin - phycsillin, and creosilviolet. Morphometry microvessels were exposed defining the diameters of their shafts of light and the area of the vascular channels.

The cornerstone of most meditation disciplines is the practice of observing, witnessing, or being mindful of the contents of one's mind or state-of-being. East Meets West

This is where Eastern meditation and physics again join hands with Western psychotherapy. Western psychotherapy asks clients to acknowledge and take responsibility for their experience. In other words, a client constructs his her subjective experience. Psychology offers awareness of a created pattern. It tries to interpret it, or work through some old unfinished business, so the pattern is not repeated again. In Eastern meditation and Sufi traditions, we are asked to observe, or just witness the mind, or to concentrate. We are asked to become so absorbed that the nature of the object will shine forth this absorption is termed samadhi. Philosophical issues

No one goes further than Kohlberg in rejecting traditional moral education. . . . The whole moral inheritance of social norms and religious codes has nothing to offer the growing child to the contrary, they run the risk of stifling his moral autonomy. Asked by parents and teachers why so many of his recommended lessons seemed to lead to the conclusion that children should resist authority, he scoffed, 'Such teachers do not believe moral behavior should be based on reasoning. . . .' In Kohlberg's system the healthy individual is the one who does not submit readily to his parents or rules. To become moral, the child has only to retreat in solitary meditation to the private monastery of his mind.

Subjectivity

The concept of the self was invoked in Western thought long before the advent of the discipline of psychology. During the Renaissance and Enlightenment, scholars often depicted humans as having a soul, spirit, or metaphysical essence. Spiritual beliefs may be adaptive and are discussed in this chapter because of the centrality of spirituality to African Americans. People of African descent are spiritual people. Spiritual beliefs provide a type of secondary control in that control is not to fate or luck, but to a higher power. As discussed in chapter 3, research has shown spiritual beliefs to aid in effective coping for African Americans. African Americans with higher levels of spirituality have better outcomes than those with lower levels of spirituality. Spiritual rituals such as attending church or mosque, reading the Koran or Bible, praying, and meditation may help one accept life circumstances and grow stronger under aversive conditions.

The paths, so often given as the only solution, are simply parent to child trances. For example, a child is told, if you're good, you'll get love. Maslow's concepts of metamotivation and transpersonal psychology. Some proponents of Maslow's theory experimented with various forms of meditation as well as drug use in attempts to bring about self-actualization however, Maslow cautioned against such practices. He thought that true self-actualization had to come from within the person, and artificial attempts to alter one's consciousness would not have much benefit in bringing about the higher need states.

When Q-switched ruby lasers were employed in large numbers in cutaneous laser surgery another serendipitous enlightenment occurred. The immensely powerful though short bursts of energy generated to fragment tattoo particles were noted not only to vaporize darkly pigmented hairs but also to bleach them below their follicular exit and even to inhibit their reappearance. Studies by Dover et al. (271) in 1989 had shown selective pigment cell damage in follicles from this laser, which caused the leukotrichia. It seemed that laser energy had reached a portion of the pigmented hair bulb and disrupted it enough so that it might act also as a depilatory, or better still, a nonscarring permanent or epilatory instrument. The Author

Wolinsky, Ph.D., began his clinical practice in Los Angeles, California in 1974. A Gestalt and Reichian therapist and trainer, he led workshops in Southern California.
