Transplacental Carcinogenesis

Brief mention should be made of the phenomenon of transplacental carcinogenesis. This is the induction of cancer in the offspring by exposure of the pregnant female. It may not occur in the foetus or even in the neonate, but may be evident only in adulthood. The best known example of this is the appearance of vaginal cancer in human females born of mothers given the drug diethylstilboestrol (figure 6.19) during pregnancy. The vaginal cancer did not appear in the female offspring until puberty.
