spasm.12'22 The question of timing can be best summed up by simply saying that coverage should be carried as soon as a wound is suitably receptive and as soon as the patient's condition will permit the procedure. There are special circumstances, however, in traumatic coverage, such as exposed major vessels and nerves, that require acute free tissue transfer 'emergency free flap', that is within 24 hours from the time of injury.94 If a free flap is used for reconstruction following tumor removal, the transfer is usually performed simultaneously with the extirpating surgery.
