Tires The early automobile wheels were constructed of wood. In time, to increase durability and the quality of the ride, coatings of harder wood, metal, or leather were added. ("The wheel, therefore, had an attire to enhance its performance. Through the years (or centuries), the term was shortened to tire" .)
Over time it was discovered that a coating inflated with air would greatly improve its performance. The tires of today are complex designs with rubber, steel belts, and fabric reinforcements. The modern tire is optimized to give the least amount of rolling resistance while still meeting its other performance requirements. This helps to increase fuel economy.
