TRPCal values calculated from Tv(Td) values and from Tig values are significantly different.

The TRPCal values are in general lower than the TRPExp values, as shown in Figure 11.5 (TRPCal values from Tv(Td) values for highly halogenated polymers are not included as they are significantly lower than the Tig values). The data in Figure 11.5 show that TRPCal values are about 24% lower than the TRPExp values. It thus appears that the purely thermal arguments based on the ignition relationship in Eq. (11.6) is not sufficient to account for the ignition behavior of polymers. There is a need to incorporate the chemical arguments for the ignition behavior of polymers.

Currently there is lack of understanding of the chemical effects on the ignition behavior of polymers. The experimental conditions, therefore, cannot be controlled precisely, and the effects are apparent in the lack of repeatability in the ignition time measurements, especially for polymers where chemical effects are stronger, such as the high-temperature and highly halogenated advanced engineered polymers. Also a better understanding of the chemical effects on the ignition behavior of polymers would lead to the development of more effective fire-retardant/fire-hardening agents for the polymers.
