Chemical recycling and feedstock recycling of plastics describe a family of plastics recycling processes that convert solid plastic materials through the use of heat or heat and catalysts into useful smaller molecules, usually liquid or gases, but sometimes solids or waxes [1, 116, 117]. Today, with few exceptions, these tertiary recycling technologies remain developmental but are of considerable interest for their longer term potential. For environmental as well as economic reasons, they will likely play a significant role in the overall recovery and recycling of plastics in the future. Figure 14.26 shows the range of tertiary recycling processes for plastics that have been under development at one time or another over the past decade and a half.
