When postconsumer or postindustrial plastics are being recycled back into high-value applications to compete with virgin resins, it is an absolute requirement that the highest standards of final product QC be part of the overall operation. The establishment of a properly equipped quality control laboratory for the analysis and testing of plastics will have to be an integral part of the plastics recycling manufacturing operation (Fig. 14.25). Product consistency is becoming more and more an absolute requirement in the marketplace. In order to ensure product consistency, compounding and pelletizing operations will often be included [1, 7, 113, 114]. In order to supply recycled plastics to some markets, for example, the
information technology market, safety-related specifications developed by groups such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) also need to be considered . This can put significant additional demands on final product quality control in a plastics recycling operation.
