Based on this study it is concluded that the mechanical recycling of mixed plastics is doubtful from an environmental point of view. It reaches the ecological level of the universal processes in feedstock recycling/energy recovery only in exceptional cases (LER > 3.3) (Fig. 13.26). While in the case of plastics substitution the substitution factor is important, it is the life expectancy ratio for the substitution of wood and the weight ratio for the substitution of concrete. The respective ecological break-even points for each recycling route are given in Table 13.3.
