Ptosis can occur due to excessive lid mass or bulk or to a scarring process in the lid.
It may result from:
• Lesions in the upper lid such as Meibomian cyst, haemangioma, plexiform neuroma of neurofibromatosis or malignant tumours for example, basal cell, squamous cell and Meibomian gland carcinomas.
• Cicatrising conditions in the lid such as conjunctival scarring.
• Trauma which can cause scarring in the lid which may act as a mass or as a splint causing mechanical ptosis.
Treatment is directed to the primary cause such as removal of a lid lump or scar mass or grafting to relieve cicatrised tissue.
