1. Olanzapine has an atypical side-effect profile with a very low incidence of EPS.
2. The effective dose range is 5-20 mg/day, although some patients may require higher doses. No titration is required. The typical starting dose is 10 mg/day.
3. Most common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, akathisia, and insomnia. Less frequent side effects include weight gain, orthostatic hypotension, nausea, and tremor. There is no evidence of hematotoxicity.
4. Olanzapine levels may be decreased by tobacco use or carbamazepine. Dose reductions should be made in the elderly.
