A. The patient engages in recurrent episodes of binging, characterized by eating an excessive amount of food within a 2-hour span and by having a sense of lack of self control over eating during the episode.

B. The patient engages in recurrent compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain (eg, self-induced vomiting, laxative, diuretic, exercise abuse).

C. The above occur on the average twice a week for three months.

D. The patient's self evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.

E. The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa.
