Many rewarding studies of plant respiration and its regulation have been carried out on isolated organelles and on cell-free extracts of plant tissues. But how does this knowledge relate to the function of the whole plant in a natural or agricultural setting?
In this section we'll examine respiration and mitochon-drial function in the context of the whole plant under a variety of conditions. First, when green tissues are exposed to light, respiration and photosynthesis operate simultaneously and interact in complex ways. Next we will discuss different rates of tissue respiration, which may be under developmental control, as well as the very interesting case of cytoplasmic male sterility. Finally, we will look at the influence of various environmental factors on respiration rates.
