Expressive Language Disorder DSM code 31531

Scores from standardized measures of expressive language development substantially below those from standardized measures of nonverbal intellectual capacity and receptive language development

May be manifested by the following:

• markedly limited vocabulary

• difficulty recalling words

• difficulty producing sentences with developmentally appropriate length or complexity

Expressive language difficulties interfere with academic or occupational achievement or with social communication

Criteria for Mixed Receptive-Expressive Language Disorder or a pervasive developmental disorder are not met

If mental retardation, speech-motor or sensory deficit, or environmental deprivation is present, language difficulties exceed those usually associated with these problems
