Intrarectal Polypectomy

The patient is prepared for the bowel operation with conventional mechanical bowel preparation. Poly-pectomy is then undertaken with an insulated colo-scope and a loop diathermy snare. Once the neck of the polyp has been grasped by the snare, the current is applied and the polyp is excised and retrieved. After the procedure, careful attention must be paid to the diathermised stalk to ensure that there is no bleeding and that the rectal wall has not been tended; a situation that might result in rectal perforation unless the base of the polyp is properly inspected. This procedure is indicated in polyps situated in rectum from 5 cm up to 15-18 cm. The diameter of the polyp should not be larger than 5 mm.
