The oncologic results of a colo-anal anastomosis with TME should be compared with the results achieved after anterior resection or APR with total mesorectum excision. The local recurrence ranges in different studies from 6 to 22% and 5-year survival ranges from 64 to 73% [29-32]. These results are comparable with those of the anterior resection and APR . The published oncologic results of colo-anal anastomosis derive from retrospective studies including tumours with heterogeneous histology, different anastomotic techniques, various chemoradiotherapy regimes and different lengths of follow-up, making this comparison of limited significance.
