Proper Oncological Resection

It is generally agreed that the definition of proper oncological resection is based on the adequacy of the tumour-free margins, specimen length and number of lymph nodes retrieved. Many reports from uncontrolled and randomised studies show that a proper oncological resection based on these principles can be done laparoscopically, following the principles of surgical oncology [5, 6, 13-15]. Adequate laparo-scopic resections have also been described specifically for the rectum and formal total mesorectal excisions can be performed [16-19].
