regeneration of sympathetic fibers in vivo (Anton et al., 1994). The integrin fibronectin receptor a5ß1 is synthesized by both Schwann cells and regenerating axons. Thus, Fn is important both for Schwann cell migration and for neurite extension on Schwann cells during regeneration (Lefcourt et al., 1992). Tenascin C also promotes neurite outgrowth in vitro (Wehrle and Chiquet, 1990) and is expressed by Schwann cells for incorporation into the basement membrane of the endoneurial tube. The upregulation of TnC in Schwann cells may be due to IL-1 and TGF-ß released by invading macrophages; these molecules enhance Tenascin C expression in other cell types (Pearson et al., 1988; McCachren and Lightner, 1992).
