While to our knowledge no correctional system has yet implemented a comprehensive and integrated health promotion initiative, in fact all elements of such a program have been implemented in some correctional facilities. Moreover, the evaluation of many such interventions shows that some have been shown to be effective or promising in achieving health outcomes or demonstrating feasibility.
In Box 13.1, we use the WHO key activities to provide an overview of the components of a comprehensive health promotion program for correctional facilities.
