As international travel becomes more commonplace in the lives of ordinary citizens all over the world, travel clinics are gaining recognition among members of the general public and among other health care institutions for their unique role in promoting the health and safety of travelers. Data from epidemiology and surveillance studies have provided the direction for the content of travel medicine practices to date. As data from evidence-based outcomes studies become available from current and future clinical investigations, it is to be expected that the practice of travel medicine will evolve in response to better understanding the interventions that lead to significant reduction in disease and injury among international travelers.
